The Legacy of Stork Jonas Lives On: Haljer’s Journey to Turkey

As is well known, our country serves as a significant stopover for migratory birds, with thousands of storks passing through these lands each year. Among these birds, two have gained particular fame among bird watchers and nature enthusiasts: Stork Jonas and his son, Stork Haljer.

Stork Jonas, born in Germany, was tracked by scientists using a GPS device from 2013 until the day he passed away. Known for his intelligence and practicality, Jonas often spent his winters in Israel. Turkey frequently served as a resting point on his migratory journey. Unfortunately, during his final migration, Jonas encountered some difficulties and health problems, leading to his untimely death. Now, his son Haljer continues to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Haljer, being younger and more energetic, has the advantage of flying faster than his father, which gives him a significant edge during his migratory journeys. In 2024, Haljer embarked on his journey from the Czech Republic towards Turkey. Along the way, he passed through countries such as Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, finally reaching Turkey last night. His journey has been followed with great excitement by nature lovers and bird watchers in our country.

It has been reported that Haljer is currently resting in Tekirdağ, and if all goes well, he is expected to arrive in Istanbul today.
